Equipment

  • Large skillet for cooking steak
  • Medium saucepan for making gravy
  • Medium pot for boiling potatoes
  • Potato masher or hand mixer for mashing potatoes
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Spatula or tongs for handling steak

Ingredients

  • For the Steak and Gravy:
  • 2 boneless ribeye or sirloin steaks or your favorite cut
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk optional for creamier gravy
  • For the Mashed Potatoes:
  • 4 medium potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
  • Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a medium pot and cover them with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 10-12 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Drain the water and return the potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.
  • Cook the Steaks
  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides. Cook the steaks for about 3-5 minutes per side (for medium-rare) or longer for your desired doneness. Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest on a plate.
  • Make the Gravy
  • In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of flour to the remaining steak drippings. Stir the flour for 1-2 minutes to create a roux. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add heavy cream or milk (if desired) to make the gravy creamier. Simmer for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens to your liking. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Assemble the Meal
  • Place the mashed potatoes on each plate and top with the cooked steak. Pour the rich gravy over the steak and mashed potatoes.
  • Enjoy!
  • Dig into this hearty meal and enjoy the tender steak, flavorful gravy, and creamy mashed potatoes. This dish is sure to satisfy your cravings for a comforting, filling dinner.
