Best Homemade Oat Milk Recipe
Oat milk is a creamy, dairy-free alternative that’s perfect for those looking to avoid cow's milk. It’s naturally sweet, easy to make, and versatile enough to use in coffee, smoothies, baking, or as a simple drink on its own. Making oat milk at home allows you to skip the additives and preservatives found in store-bought versions, giving you a cleaner, more flavorful drink.
Blender
Fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag
Bowl or pitcher for storage
Optional: Sweetener (maple syrup, agave, or vanilla extract)
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1-2 tablespoons sweetener maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
- Pinch of salt optional
Rinse the Oats:
Place the rolled oats in a fine mesh strainer and rinse them thoroughly under cold water to remove excess starch. This helps to prevent the oat milk from being too slimy.
Blend the Oats:
Add the rinsed oats and water into a high-speed blender.
If you want to sweeten your oat milk, add maple syrup or agave syrup and a pinch of salt. You can also add vanilla extract for extra flavor.
Blend Until Smooth:
Blend on high for about 30-45 seconds until the oats are fully blended and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Strain the Milk:
Pour the oat mixture through a fine mesh strainer, nut milk bag, or cheesecloth into a bowl or pitcher to separate the liquid from the oat pulp.
Use a spoon to gently press the oats to extract as much liquid as possible. The pulp can be composted, added to smoothies, or used in baking.
Store the Oat Milk:
Pour the freshly made oat milk into an airtight jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. It will last for about 3-5 days. Be sure to shake it before each use, as it can naturally separate.
Serve:
Use your oat milk in coffee, smoothies, baking, or simply enjoy it as a refreshing beverage.
